How to Spend 2 Days in Auckland: The Perfect First-Timer’s Itinerary
Planning your first trip to Auckland? This 2-day Auckland itinerary covers the best things to do in the city, from Mount Eden and the waterfront to Giapo, the Sky Tower, and easy day trip ideas like Waiheke Island, Rangitoto, Devonport, and Piha Beach.

To some travelers, Auckland may just be a stopover city on their way to the mountains, glaciers, and fiords of the South Island. But to others, like myself (and hopefully you by the end of this guide!), Auckland is a fun playground of city adventures, coastal views, good food, and even some great outdoor activities in nature.
If you’re wondering how to spend 2 days in Auckland, this itinerary will help you make the most of your time without cramming your schedule so full that you forget to actually enjoy it.
Auckland was the first stop on my journey after I quit my 9-5 and left on a one-way ticket to New Zealand. I initially planned to spend only a day or two here while I got acclimated to the country and adjusted to the time change, but once I realized how much there was to see, eat, and explore, I ended up extending my stay to five days.
In this guide, I’ll share the best things to do in Auckland, plus how to easily spend two (or more) days in New Zealand’s biggest city – whether you’re here for a stopover, the start of a bigger New Zealand adventure, or a sweet little city escape of its own.

Is 2 Days in Auckland Enough Time?
Short answer: for a first taste of the city, yes. Will you explore every nook and cranny of New Zealand’s largest city in two days? No. But you will get a solid feel for Auckland and still have time to enjoy a few of its best views, neighborhoods, food stops, and day trips.
This Auckland itinerary is designed for first-time visitors who want a mix of city views, food, waterfront wandering, and one easy day trip.
The Best 2 Day Auckland Itinerary for First-Time Visitors
Day 1 – Mt. Eden, the Waterfront, Giapo, and the Sky Tower
Morning:

Start your day with a city hike to Mt. Eden (Maungawhau). Mt. Eden is one of the top attractions in Auckland and offers incredible views of the city. For your first time in Auckland, this is a great activity to do as it orients you to the city and gives you a 360-degree view of Auckland’s cityscape, mountains, beaches, and bays. The walk from the base of the hill to the viewpoint at the top is about 1.3 miles / 2.1 km
✨ Tip: You can also do this hike for some amazing sunset views!
Lunch:
After Mount Eden, head back toward the city center and spend some time wandering Britomart, Commercial Bay, and the Viaduct Harbour. This area is easy to explore on foot and has plenty of restaurants, shops, and waterfront views, making it a great place to slow down for lunch before your afternoon sweet treat.
Afternoon:

No good city itinerary is complete without a sweet treat, and Giapo is the perfect place to satisfy your craving. What makes Giapo fun isn’t just the gelato; it’s the whole experience. Everything they make is very unique and fun, from their ice cream designs and special cones to their creative flavors, like ruby lychee strawberry and their very own Giapo Buono, which is a delicious combination of caramel, hazelnut, praline, and amaretti.
It feels creative, thoughtful, and very Auckland: a little artsy, a little playful, and absolutely worth building into your afternoon. Even better, the shop is 100% gluten-free, which is especially helpful if you have celiac disease, a gluten sensitivity, or are just trying to limit your overall gluten intake, like me.
Along with gelato, Giapo also has a bakery and espresso bar, making it an easy place to grab a sweet treat and an afternoon pick-me-up after your busy morning. If you really can’t decide on what to get, you can also order a bakery treat with ice cream on top. I guarantee you can’t go wrong with any of the options at Giapo.
✨ Tip: You can take your sweet treat to-go and stroll along the waterfront!

Evening

Head up to the Sky Tower for amazing 360-degree sunset views across Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau. If you want, you can also dine at Orbit 360 Dining, a revolving restaurant on Level 52 of the tower. You can also grab a drink at the SkyBar on Level 50.
✨ Tip: Hours vary by season, and the last entry is usually 45 minutes before closing. For the most up-to-date hours and information, you can check out the Sky Tower website.
Day 2 – Choose Your Auckland Day Trip
Rise and shine! For your second day in Auckland, I recommend choosing one of the bigger adventures below. Auckland is a large area with lots to see, and a day trip from Auckland proper is a great option to see more of New Zealand’s biggest metropolitan area.
Choose between wine and beaches, ferries and volcanoes, or a glimpse of New Zealand’s wild west coast at one of my favorite beaches.
Option A: Waiheke Island for Wine and Beaches

If you like wine, pretty beaches, and dreamy island views, Waiheke Island is the day trip for you. Reached via a short 35-45 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, Waiheke is home to a delicious assortment of red wines, beautiful beaches, and even some olive oil tasting.
✨Tip: Fullers360, Island Direct, and SeaLink all offer ferry service to Waiheke Island.
Once you’re on the island, you can take the local buses to the wineries, rent a bike or scooter for the day, or book a wine tour if you want the easiest option.
Interested in wineries? Check out Poderi Crisci, Stonyridge, or Tantalus. Interested in wineries with great views? Check out Mudbrick or Te Motu. Interested in a snack after all your wine? Check out Casita Miro.
✨Tip: This is probably the least budget-friendly option of the day trips, but perhaps the best combination of food, beaches, and views.
Option B: Devonport or Rangitoto for an Easy Ferry Adventure

There are many exciting islands to explore in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland that offer everything from rugged nature escapes to leisurely daytime strolls.
If you’re in the mood to be in nature and see New Zealand’s youngest and largest dormant volcano, head to Rangitoto, where you can hike to the summit and explore the lava caves along the way. Rangitoto can be reached via a 25-30 minute ferry from Downtown Auckland.
If you’re more in the mood for a chill day exploring a nearby residential suburb with quaint buildings, a beach, and a hill to climb to see Auckland from another vantage point, head to Devonport. Devonport can be reached via a quick 12-minute ferry ride from Downtown Auckland.
Both Devonport and Rangitoto are easy ferry trips from downtown Auckland, but they offer very different experiences. Fullers360 is the primary ferry operator for these routes.
Option C: Piha Beach for Wild West Coast Views

The west coast of New Zealand is one of my favorite places. It’s a bit wild and windy, full of black sand beaches, and some of the best sunsets you’ll see.
If you have a car, drive to Piha and spend the day at the beach. On your way over, pick up some coffee at Dear Deer. Dear Deer has a delicious assortment of roasts and will grind your chosen roast right then and there for you!
During my 3 months in New Zealand, I used Kayak for my car rentals and loved them. Finding good deals on rental cars is easy and straight forward and I reccomend using them while you are in Auckland.
While in Piha, you can walk along the black sand beach and take in the views of Lion Rock, hike the short Mercer Bay Track for dramatic coastal views, or visit Kitekite Falls, a nearby waterfall reached by a fairly accessible trail.
✨Tip: Piha can be dangerous for swimming due to the strong current and pounding waves. However, Piha is an excellent surf beach, if that’s your jam. If you’re looking to relax and take a dip in the water near Auckland, check out Takapuna, Kohimarama, or St. Heliers Beach.
Where to Stay for 2 Days in Auckland
Looking for where to stay in Auckland for your first time?
For a first-time Auckland itinerary, I’d recommend staying somewhere central. The CBD is convenient and close to many major transportation connections, while Britomart and the Viaduct are great if you want to be near restaurants, shops, and the waterfront. Ponsonby is another fun option with great restaurants, boutiques, and easy access to Karangahape Road, which is perfect for a DIY food crawl.
